Helen Jackson (Nurse)

Jan. 4, 1991

A memorial service for Helen B. Jackson, a retired nurse with the  Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda School District, will be scheduled in Kenmore United Methodist Church.  Mrs. Jackson, 90, of Kenmore, died Jan. 4, 1991, in Kenmore Mercy  Hospital.  A Salamanca native, Mrs. Jackson was a nurse-teacher in Ken-Ton schools  from 1927 to 1966.  She graduated from Millard Fillmore School of Nursing in 1922 and attended  Western Reserve University in Cleveland.  Before moving to Kenmore, Mrs. Jackson was a member of the Milbank  Demonstration in Cattaraugus County, the first county health unit in the  state.  As part of the program, she traveled to farms helping to immunize residents against diphtheria and other diseases. When she assumed her duties in the school system, she was the only nurse-teacher in the fledgling district. By  1940, the district population had grown so that she was assigned full time to  Kenmore Senior High School, now Kenmore West High School.  In addition to assisting the school doctor with routine examinations, she  taught classes in home nursing and first aid.  She was a past president of the Western Zone Nurse Teachers Association and the Erie County Nurse Teachers Association and a member of the executive  committee of the New York State Nurse Teachers Association and Kenmore  Community Service.  She was the widow of Edwin S. Jackson.
