Alvin Kurth (Teacher)

A memorial service for Alvin Frank Kurth Jr. of Kenmore, a retired science teacher, will be at 2 p.m. June 10 in Church of the Nativity United Church of Christ, 1530 Colvin Blvd., Kenmore. A private graveside service was held today in Elmlawn Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.
Mr. Kurth, who was born in Buffalo, died Monday in Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, Springville, after apparently suffering a heart attack at his summer home at Rainbow Lake in East Otto, Cattaraugus County. He was 76.
He was educated in City of Tonawanda schools and a graduate of Tonawanda High School. Mr. Kurth earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Buffalo in 1951 and a master's of education degree at UB in 1952. He attended Oswego State Teachers College during the summer of 1953.  Mr. Kurth taught in Le Roy Central Schools for eight years and then at Kenmore West Senior High School until his retirement in 1990.  While attending high school and during some of his college and teaching years, he worked weekends and summers as a motion picture projectionist through Buffalo Local 233, International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and Motion Picture Machine Operators of the United States and Canada. He worked in most Buffalo-area theaters on a part-time basis until about 1990.  He also served for 81/2 years in the New York National Guard, rising to the rank of sergeant.  Mr. Kurth was active in several community organizations, including Meals on Wheels and the Kenmore-Tonawanda Historical Society. He enjoyed camping, bowling and playing theater organs.  Survivors include his wife of 46 years, the former Louise Aubrey; a daughter, Marcia Orleman of Kenmore; a son, Alvin F. III of Kenmore; and three grandchildren.
